Why this is the perfect time for you to join CVRD

All the rumors are true! Central Vermont Roller Derby is recruiting new skaters in 2018. Last season, we saw a shift in membership as several of our seasoned skaters retired from the sport. Now we are looking for strong, enthusiastic, tenacious, badass women and gender-expansive folks to rebuild our team. That's what makes 2018 a great time to begin your soon-to-be-legendary roller derby career.

On a logistical level, winter is the derby off-season. This means that seasoned skaters are more available to train fresh meat (new skaters) and there are more scrimmages to participate in during the winter once you pass your first assessments. See our recent blog post to learn more about roller derby assessments.

Okay, so we all get the winter blues. It can be hard to tear yourself away from that comfy spot by the woodstove. But deep winter is one of the best times to strap on those skates! Firstly, it helps beat that sense of isolation that's all-too-prevalent in the colder months. It's great exercise, which will lift your mood and keep your body healthy. Medical research suggests that exercise may be the single best thing you can do to improve your health, but many people struggle to stick to an exercise routine that can feel like a chore. Roller derby practice will definitely make you sweat. You will feel the burn, but you will also feel a sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, power, joy, and confidence that you may never have thought was possible. Our rookies come from many walks of life and diverse athletic backgrounds (including no athletic background whatsoever!). All skill levels are welcomed with open arms and we provide loaner skates and protective gear free of charge so you can test the waters before investing in your own gear. All you need to bring is a mouthguard. We don't share those for obvious reasons.

We are a tight-knit group who support and care about each other, but we would like to grow and fill our roster. We would love to meet you and show you what this sport is all about! The first practice is free, so what have you got to lose?

We'll be practicing from 11-1 at the Montpelier Rec Center on Barre St. every Sunday in January and February. Check out our Facebook page for up-to-date announcements and email us if you have any questions. You're always welcome to show up unannounced, but it's very helpful if you contact us before your first practice. Occasionally something comes up and we may need to cancel or reschedule a practice. Hope to see you on Sunday!
